A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH THE CALIFORNIA GUITAR TRIO
Imagine three virtuoso guitarists playing as if they were one musician, but with 18 strings. That's the California Guitar Trio, three musicians who studied with King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp and played in his League of Crafty Guitarists, a 20 piece guitar orchestra, before embarking on their own path 13 years ago. They've just released a compilation CD, The First Decade, celebrating 10years of recording. The trio comes into the Echoes Living Room to play a pair of new songs, an old Echoes favorite and a startling rendition of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody."

From September 5, 1998: The California Guitar Trio, speak to National Public Radio on All Things Considered, and demonstrate the demanding technique of parts circulation. The group also explains the unique method they use in tuning their guitars, the New Standard Tuning, which enables them to hit higher high notes, and lower low notes. This allows them to play classical compositions, such as Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, which are normally impossible on guitar. They play some songs from their CD "Pathways", demonstrating that they play not only classical music but rock and surf tunes as well. 10 minutes.
